Peace Be Upon You

2016
Open print edition
"Peace Be Upon You" is an ongoing non-editioned artwork reflecting on the nature of religious devotion. Working from a set of Tibetan Lungta prayer flags acquired during a peace march with Thubten Jigme Norbu on Washington D.C. in the early 2000s, I hand transcribed and carved each prayer onto a linoleum block from which I repeatedly printed a string of 5 flags until each is blackened beyond the point of recognition. The aim of which is to highlight the often contradictory mixed signifiers that arise from well-meaning liberal religious interpretation / practice. The work is to be installed according to custom: outdoors under auspicious circumstances, with the burning of the included specially prepared rhododendron incense, and the recetial of prayers.
